B.C. reports 556 new COVID-19 cases, six deaths

B.C. health officials reported 556 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 355,648 cases.

Of the new cases, 109 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 110 in the Fraser Health region, 151 in the Island Health region, 144 in the Interior Health region, 42 in the Northern Health region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 288 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 and 48 are in intensive care.

To date, 11,481,922 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,350,266 of those are second doses and 2,661,745 are third doses. 

This means that 93.8 per cent of adults, 93.4 per cent of people aged 12 and older, and 90.8 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 91.4 per cent of adults, 91 per cent of those aged 12 and older, and 87.3 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 59.2 per cent of adults and 57.4 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were six new COVID-related deaths reported since Friday, bringing that total to 2,989. Of those who died, two lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, two in the Fraser Health region, and two in the Island Health region.

Health authorities reported one health-care facility outbreak over. Active outbreaks continue at five long-term care facilities and one acute care facility.

From March 18 to 24, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 16.1 per cent of cases. From March 11 to 24, they accounted for 24.8 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 22 (1.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,247 (83.9 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (March 11 to 24)—Total 391

• Not vaccinated: 82 (21 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 15 (3.8 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 294 (75.2 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (March 18 to 24)

• Not vaccinated: 61.6

• Partially vaccinated: 16.8

• Fully vaccinated: 26.7

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (March 11 to 24)

• Not vaccinated: 23.3

• Partially vaccinated: 13.4

• Fully vaccinated: 6.2
